2 Bertel Thorvaldsen Ages of Man Greek Mythological Plaques
TWO (Embossed in Black Felt behind Glass in Antique Frame) Bertel Thorvaldsen ‘Ages of Man’ Greek Mythological Roundel Plaques. Bertel Thorvaldsen's Ages of Man plaques are based on an interpretation of the poem 'The Four Ages of Man' written by Anne Bradstreet (1612 – 1672). Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) lived in Rome for many years where he became one of the most important European representatives of Neo-Classicist sculptural art. In the Ages of Man Series, the Youth Roundel (Summer) depicts A young woman, on her knees, is binding wheat-sheaves; another, still holding her sickle, is embraced by a young man who offers her fruit. In the Ages of Man Series, Childhood Roundel (Spring) depicts a classic greek nude young woman accepting flowers from a child and giving them to a toddler who’s arranging them on a wreath. The plates are made in bisquit, which is glazed porcelain and the motifs are made in beautiful relief in the white classicist style, which Thorvaldsen was one of the foremost proponents of. A set sold at Christie’s in 2008 for $500. This set comes from an east coast estate sale. The pictures don’t do this piece justice, they are pure white on a rich black felt background and are strikingly neo classical greek italian renaissance revival.
